Materials:
- Clay.
- A tray (for the base).
- A plastic cup.
- Baking soda.
- Detergent.
- Colorant.
- Vinegar.
- Paint: brown, green, red ... (optional).
Process:
There are many ways to make a volcanic cone: with newsprint, plasticine, cardboard ... We have chosen to do it with clay.
To begin, we take the tray, which will be the base of our volcano, and we put the block of clay on top. We make a hole in the upper part with the hands or with the help of a spoon of the size of the diameter of the glass; This will be the crater. Once done, we introduce the plastic cup here and mold the clay around it so that it is not noticed. Little by little we mold the clay until it is the proper form of a real volcano. It is important to use a good amount of clay, since if the layer is too thin cracks may form when it dries.
Once we have achieved the desired shape, we will have to let the clay dry for about 2 days.
When dry, it is time to paint. For the exterior of the volcano we will use brown paint, except in the bottom, that we will paint of green. Also we will paint of green the tray, since it is the base of the volcano. Finally, we will use the red paint to draw some lava lines along the volcano that will give you more realism, in addition to the inside of the plastic cup.
Once we dry our volcanic cone, we take the four main ingredients to get the lava: baking soda, detergent, coloring and vinegar.
The first thing we throw in the "chimney" of our volcano is bicarbonate, about a quarter of the glass. Then we add some coloring of the color that we choose, preferably red. Then we throw three large tablespoons of detergent and thoroughly remove the mixture. Finally, we begin to pour the vinegar slowly, until we see that the mixture begins to rise.
